Dracula is a modern fictional name ascribed to the historical individual Vlad III Tepes III, who became known as Vlad the Impaler and Vlad Dracul. At the close of the 15th century Vlad become one of the undead. The nature of his Embrace, his clan, and his true history are among the greater mysteries of the Kindred.
It is believed (and somewhat agreed) that Dracula existed, that he spent time among other Kindred, that he wrote the Rites of the Dragon, that he founded the Ordo Dracul, and that he discovered the Coils of the Dragon.
Clanless?
Dracula is a mystery to many Kindred, the Ordo Dracul especially, because he claim to have no sire, to have been made a vampire by a curse from God himself, a dark honor many Kindred believe to have been bestowed upon Longinus. Among the Order he founded many have debated his true origins and the loose agreement that if Dracula has a clan, it is Gangrel.
In Vampire: The Masquerade, Dracula is a member of the Old Clan Tzimisce.
Unlife
Clanless or not, the fact remains that Dracula was a truly exceptional Kindred who is believed to have studied under all of the three existing covenants of the day, the Invictus, Lanca Sancum, and Circle of the Crone. Unable to find the answers to his questions in any of the groups,
Modern Day
Much of the Order believes that Dracula himself still survives into the modern era, possibly no longer a true vampire but progressed into something more.
At any time there are, of course, several Kindred claiming to be Dracula. Some are foolish ancillia seeking power, some are elders seeking the same but with much greater wisdom. A select few vampires have the age, power, and charisma to make believable claims. At present, there are three Kindred who might be the real thing. Each has a following but none have the backing of the covenant as a whole (or part really).
