Kai was taken into a Buddhist Monastery in Houston when he was young, after his family was killed in a car accident due to a drunk driver. His awakening happened gradually, shortly after his training began in martial arts. Not only did he display immense short bursts of strength and dexterity, his focus and fortune help make him successful at almost everything he put his hand to. When he left the monastery at 18, after Master Zhan passed away, he took his charge and became a protector of man. Most of the time he has taken on creature of the night, though every once in a while he has had confrontation with other normal men. He had began losing track of his purpose, taking up to drinking, and sometimes completely forgetting his teachings at the monastery altogether. That was until they called him back several years later. He stayed at the monestary for months, while the memebers there helped him refocus. In that time, he met and became friends with West. West headed up to Baltimore, and as luck would have it, the Monestary sent Kai packing as well to Baltimore, to handle a Mage who all but destroyed the Order's foothold in the city.

Below are some snippets of Kai's early life

At the age of 18, during an 8 hour meditation was when he knew what he had become: He peered into the void. He could be struck across the head, and yet would still be at peace. The void was empty, except for the voice behind him which in the quiet rang as loud as a bell: “Your light will be a beacon for the world. I will guide you.” “Who am I? What am I? How will you guide me?” “Your soul is old, and strong. You just need to search it, grow it, feed it. All things will be made clear over time. You have to hold on to two things during your journeys. Your honor and your convictions. Without those, you will not achieve what needs to be achieved.” “Some of you fight the Lie, some of you fight each other. You are a guide for the lost. You are their protector. This is your charge, to lead the path and to hold man to his promise to become something more, and making sure they are protected to be able to do so.” Kai opened his eyes. He knew what he had to become.

“Master Zhan, I think I just had a prophetic vision about being a beacon for man” “I know. That was your avatar speaking to you, but it would be a mistake to think you are an agent of peace”, he looked at his student. This one had been the strongest he had ever trained, and possibly the strongest he had ever been around. “How so? The greatest changes involving humanistic qualities have come through peaceful efforts,” this was a first. Even though he was trained in martial arts, it was always taught as a last resort. “That’s the part we haven’t gotten to yet Kai. I’m certain at this point you know you have other qualities that surpass your peers. You are what others like you refer to as ‘awakened’. As an awakened, you are charged with higher responsibilities than even people like Gandhi or Mother Theresa. But you are not being unleashed to change anything about un-awakened humans or their basic condition. They have plenty of people fighting for them in that regard, and plenty of people fighting against them. What they don’t see is the monsters fighting against them.” Kai looked at master Zhan. He had alluded to other things before, and Kai certainly had seen things he could do that defied natural physics. “Are we talking metaphorical monsters, or things that go ‘bump’ in the night? ” “Both really. Every metaphor has some basis in reality. I’m training you to be an agent for change, and this type of change requires physical strength, determination, and mental clarity. You will be fighting the things that most people believe to be legend: Vampires and Werewolves, amongst other things. These aren’t just imaginary creatures, they do exist, and they are every bit as evil as the stories portray them, save the silly teenage pop culture nonsense.” “So exactly how would you expect me to enforce change? What stops me from being seen as one of these monsters if I wield so much more power than they do?” “You will have to fight these monsters, and you will have to kill a lot of them. Maybe some can be reasoned with, but they, especially the vampires, are so wrapped up in their own parasitic ways that their humanity is lost forever. As for you becoming a monster, you must always focus. Don’t let the arrogance take you, and never once for a minute think that you can or should play as a god amongst people. That is where most falter. You will have to stay focused. Kai bowed. Today’s lesson would only lead to more questions, but was reassured that everything would be revealed in time. Kai chuckled to himself. "yeah, right."

Grab the void. GRAB THE VOID! He was having a hard time staying calm. This was the biggest thing he had ever seen in his life. Master Zhan had told him stories of werewolves, but he thought he would have at least seen one in action before fighting it. The bite came down fast, barely missing flesh on the arm and ripping his shirt. Kai responded with a palm to the side of the head. It looked like it did some, but not much as the animal responded knocking Kai back 10 feet with a punch that almost knocked him out. In the tunnel vision that followed, the peace flowed over him, and the life magic flowed through him. He could make himself at least close to as strong as this thing was. He responded with a flurry of blows faster than anything he had ever delivered before. Kick to the side of the head, followed with a palm strike to the throat, followed with a fist through the eyeball, followed with an over the head kick to the side of the snout. The thing fell. Kai kept going, it wasn’t getting up. The figure changed back. Kai looked in horror. This kid couldn’t have been more than 16 or 17 years old. How had he followed him? Why had it attacked him? He had never seen this kid before in his life, and no one would see this kid again (alive anyway). He was dead. There was no recovering from wounds like that.

Maybe there was hope for this one. He was just turning into an adult after all. “Do you swear to that? You’re a slave! You can’t keep killing people to feed the parasite! Do you swear to stop?” “Yeah man, whatever. I won’t do it anymore. I swear.” Kai was willing to hold onto this one. His nimbus flared. For a few moments, the world blurred faces seemed to be shaking uncontrollably in the distance, like some creepy ghost show. Thoughts became unclear and then in an instant, everything was crystal clear, as if it had gone through a photo editing process to remove all blurs, all unnecessary lines. Then it was done. Kai bound this man to his promise. If he broke this, his life would be a living hell for a long time “Then go, and I trust it won’t happen again” the guy gave Kai a weak smirk. Kai heard a couple weeks later the man had been killed in a 3 car accident. No one else had been injured. Kai just shook his head. “Are people really that desperate?”…he figured so. He had been alone for a long time. He wasn’t very suave. Most people saw him as too stoic. Maybe he was. He couldn’t tell anymore. He had seen enough since he had left the monastery, he couldn’t open up to most people about it anyway.

She was gorgeous. The kind of girl you only see in movies. And she hadn’t so much as given him a second look. It wasn’t unusual, but just once, just this once he hoped. Kai had no idea what had come over him, but he cast the spell. She would know him, know him as a best friend from long ago, know him as a strong a caring man, and know him as the best lover she had ever had. It was quick, it was easy, and it had worked. Instantly. She walked over to him, and began talking about their college days. Kai was actually surprised it had worked this well. They laughed, joked, and cut up. Some of her friends were a little skeptical, but it took little time for Lisa to convince them that Kai was the best thing since sliced bread. He could have stopped there. The attention was satisfying, even in this fleeting moment of falsity. He felt happy, as if he had taken some drug he knew he would come down off of sometime tomorrow. But for now…She smelled wonderful, she was beautiful, and before long, she was his. It was the first time in what seemed to be years. He couldn’t remember. It was the best night of his life. After it was over, he kissed on the lips, left a bogus number on her coffee table, intentionally using a lot of poorly written 9’s and 4’s, and left her apartment. After walking for a while, he had no idea where, it hit him like a ton of bricks. He had just raped someone. No, he didn’t use a drug, didn’t do physical harm, but for all intents and purposes, this young woman had been raped. He felt like a monster. “Don’t let the arrogance take you, and never once for a minute think that you can or should play as a god amongst people. That is where most falter. You will have to stay focused.” I’m sorry he thought to himself. I’m so sorry.

It was several months later. He tried to keep a low profile, even thought about leaving before being noticed, but before he knew it, it was too late. She had seen him. And this time she knew, this wasn’t a friend from her past. This was a guy who had conned her. It didn’t take long. She had rounded up a troop of around 5 guy friends. Five of her closest Fuck buddies Kai thought, and she was going to make a big deal of him. Fair enough. He knew he was wrong. Fate has a way of making you pay the piper, but usually not this direct. He took the last swig of this drink. One of the guys grabbed him by the arm. “No need to cause a scene right here guys” Kai said. “Follow me outside”. The first blow from the guy was a joke. 5 year olds had hit him harder “Wanna trick my sister into fucking you?” So that was her brother “I think you need to work on your righ…” before he could finish his words the kick hit him square in the back and sent him flying forward. Before he could get up, several kicks followed. After a few seconds, they stopped. Kai stood up. He stretched a little. He had a couple cuts and scrapes, but other than the huge bruise he could feel forming on his back, he was alright. “Is that the best you got? I thought being a chink and all, you would offer up at least a little bit of challenge” “Are you finished?” Kai said “Not even close” all of them came in at once. Kai felt he deserved everything that followed. He let them hit. Over and over again they hit him, until he could feel himself about to pass out from the pain. One of them had been using some sort of blunt object to hit him, A small pipe probably. Where’d he get that on such short notice? Before they could knock him out, Kai quickly pushed all of them off and stood up. “You’re done now” one of the guys charged him. A quick kick to the throat quelled any further efforts from him. He dropped like a bag of potatoes. Kai looked like shit. His clothes were stained in blood, and he could barely see out of his right eye. He looked at Lisa “We’re even now.” He turned and walked away. But the statement was hollow. He could never be forgiven for that.
