Valentine Selba was born in Miami, FL on February 14th, 1985 to a cracked out single mother who had him in foster care before his first birthday. His childhood consisted of a number of internments in the system as well as few dismal years with his mother. This childhood made Val desire more from life. He shoplifted frequently as a child and was known to act out. Despite this, he also was highly defensive of younger children.

When he entered high school, Valentine discovered his passion, computers. It was his love of computers that also made him one of the brightest math and science students in his school. He taught himself to write code by the time he was a sophomore, and began hacking his school network by his junior year. When he graduated in 2003, Valentine was beginning to understand how profitable his skills were. In the fall of that year he began studying Computer Sciences and Network Security Administration at the University of Miami. Spring of the following year Valentine discovered just how lucrative embezzlement was.

Valentine graduated in 2007 and became a network security consultant. He worked for the city of Miami as well as a number of private companies. During this time he acquire large amounts of money, but also was unfortunate enough to have robbed from members of organized crime. They used private companies he provided security for to launder money. When Val's theft was discovered, the gangs he had robbed provided an ultimatum, work for them, or die. Naturally he chose survival. Unfortunately for Val, survival meant undeath. The gangs were puppets of the local Kindred. Rather than kill a talented young hacker, they had him embraced.

Leona Andrews was a Mehket in low standing who had nearly caused a breach and was willing to do anything to atone. The reigning Prince ordered her to embrace Valentine as punishment. Initially the embrace was a massive shock to Valentine, he tried several times, unsuccessfully, to kill himself. Eventually, however, he resigned himself to the fact that he was to be a tool. Valentine allowed himself to be taught the etiquette of vampire society though during this time Leona and Valentine were never close. There was a certain animosity between the pair due to his lack of enthusiasm for undeath. They maintained a curt relationship for the duration of his tenancy in Miami.

It was during this time that he also began doing some of his most incredible work. The gift of intelligence granted by the Mehket gave him an edge over much of his competition. That combined with his increasing skill gave the Court of Miami access to huge amounts of information and money. Still, Valentine found no happiness where he was.

In the summer of 2011, Valentine crashed the network he had built for the Court of Miami and erased the financial data that gave them access to their funds. Essentially wiping out all his work he had done for them. Of course by wiping out the financial data left Valentine with minimal funds himself. He fled Miami and headed West, eventually arriving in Sacramento. Valentine has a major fear of the Court's agents finding him, so much so that it borders on paranoia.
